The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation announced today the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors:
- Antonia “Toni” G. McGuire, RN, MPH, President and CEO of the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center in Worcester; and
- Bruce Nash, MD, MBA, Chief Physician Executive and Senior Vice President of Health and Medical Management at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
“We are thrilled to have Toni and Bruce – two health care practitioner executives who truly understand the mission of community health – join our board,” said Phil Johnston, Chairman of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. “Given the uncertainty in the world of health care, we are fortunate to have such an experienced group of individuals leading the Foundation’s strategy and community investments.”
McGuire has more than three decades of experience working in or with community health centers. Since 2008 she has led the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center, where she directed an intensive strategic planning initiative that included renaming the organization to honor the late senator who was a legislative champion of the national community health center movement.She previously served as CEO of Manet Community Health Center in Quincy and, while at Boston Medical Center, helped establish a family practice residency program embedded in Boston-based community health centers. Nationally, she chairs a subcommittee on health care finance for the National Association of Community Health Centers.McGuire received her nursing degrees from the Community College of Rhode Island and a bachelor’s degree from Maryville University in St. Louis. While serving as the Health Services Director at the Family Care Health Center in St. Louis, she received a U.S. Public Health Service scholarship and earned her Master of Public Health degree from St. Louis University.
A board-certified family physician who practiced for more than two decades in upstate New York, Dr. Nash has held executive leadership positions at health plans and hospitals during his career, including an extensive tenure with Community Health Plan in Latham, N.Y. Prior to joining Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, one of the nation’s largest independent, not-for-profit BCBS plans, he served as chief medical officer of Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan in Albany, N.Y.
Among other accomplishments, Dr. Nash led the development of a nationally recognized initiative, known as the Enhanced Primary Care program, which focused on the transformation of primary care medicine in New York’s Capital Region. He currently serves on the Board of the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation.
Dr. Nash earned a Master of Business Administration degree in health sector management from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, a medical degree from Albany Medical College, and a bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
