BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD OF MASSACHUSETTS FOUNDATION AWARDS $600,000
TO FOSTER CULTURALLY COMPETENT HEALTH CARE
BOSTON—May 8, 2004— Language differences, divergent values among providers and patients, limited caregiver diversity and other factors can all impede access to quality health care services. For instance, there are 31 mistakes in medical interpretation per clinical encounter, most with clinical consequences, according to a 2003 Pediatrics magazine article on cultural competence. Cultural and linguistic barriers to health care are as diverse as patient groups themselves. To help expand access to culturally competent health care, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation (BCBSMA Foundation) recently awarded $600,000 to 19 organizations across Massachusetts.
